Samah Karaki: We cannot count on empathy to save us

In this interview with our publication, the neuroscientist emphasizes that in the face of crimes committed by Israel in Palestine and Lebanon, appealing to feelings does not replace either law or political action.

The chapter that opened on Oct. 7, 2023 highlighted the unequal treatment, in many Western media outlets, of human lives depending on the identity of the victims. On the Israeli side: individuals, stories, emotions. On the Palestinian and Lebanese sides: numbers, statistics, collateral damage. Admittedly, the print press has shown a greater diversity of approaches, and as the violence escalated in Palestine and Lebanon, more critical voices also emerged on some continuous news channels.
