An Iraqi fighter from the Hashed al-Shaabi was killed Saturday in a strike near the Syrian border, the coalition of former paramilitaries said in a statement, accusing the United States and Israel.
“This treacherous attack resulted in the martyrdom of a Hashed al-Shaabi fighter and wounded four others, as well as a member of the Ministry of Defense,” the coalition added. The group, which includes pro-Iran factions, is integrated into Iraq’s state security forces.
The “American-Zionist [Israeli]” attack took place in Anbar province, it said.
Iraq has been drawn into the Middle East war launched Feb. 28 by U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, with attacks on its territory targeting both American interests and pro-Iran armed factions.
Since the start of the conflict, Hashed al-Shaabi positions have been targeted several times, with the group consistently attributing the strikes to the United States and Israel.
According to Saturday’s statement, the latest strike targeted a position of the 45th Brigade, affiliated with the powerful pro-Iran group Kataeb Hezbollah, which is on the U.S. blacklist.
Washington has said helicopters have carried out strikes against pro-Iran armed groups in Iraq since the start of the war, but has denied targeting Iraqi security forces.
Separately, a fire broke out after two drone strikes on the Burjesia oil complex in southern Iraq, where foreign companies operate, a security source told AFP.
Many oil facilities operated by foreign companies in Iraq have suspended operations since the start of the war.
