Saudi Arabia on Saturday condemned Israeli strikes carried out in southern Syria, joined by Egypt, Qatar, Jordan and Kuwait.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s strongest condemnation of the blatant Israeli aggression targeting military infrastructure in the south of the Syrian Arab Republic, in flagrant violation of international law and Syrian sovereignty,” the Saudi ministry said in a statement.

Egypt, Qatar, Jordan and Kuwait joined the condemnation, stressing the need to guarantee Syria’s sovereignty and the role of the international community in preventing such attacks.

The Israeli army, describing the action as a “response” to attacks against the Druze population, said it had targeted “Syrian regime infrastructure” overnight from Thursday to Friday, including a headquarters and “weapons in Syrian regime military camps” in southern Syria.

Syria denounced a “new aggression, under misleading pretexts and entirely fabricated arguments,” as well as “the policy of escalation by the Israeli occupier and its policy of interference in national affairs.”

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry urged the U.N. Security Council “to assume its responsibilities and to take immediate measures to put an end to the ongoing Israeli violations and attacks.”

On Friday, Turkey had already denounced a “dangerous escalation” and called on the international community to “put an end” to the attacks in Syria.
