War in Lebanon: Cornered, Nabih Berri keeps playing a ‘double game’
As efforts to secure a cease-fire intensify, the parliament speaker no longer appears central to the international community, which seems to be turning instead to Aoun and Salam.

Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has been caught off guard by Hezbollah. He was blindsided by the militia party — his longtime ally — when it joined the regional war alongside Iran without any prior consultation with its “big brother,” who has since maintained a disapproving silence.As if that were not enough, he has also taken indirect hits in recent days: his strongholds of Zahrani and Haret Saida (Saida district) were bombed by Israel, and at least one member of his Amal Movement was killed in a strike on Thursday.To make matters worse — for Berri, at least — unlike during the 2024 war, he will not be the sole interlocutor for mediators seeking a cease-fire formula this time.
