Naval deployment off Cyprus: What is Europe's involvement in the war on Lebanon?
The dispatch of the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier and frigates by several European countries is primarily meant to "reaffirm their ability to project military force," according to Guillaume Ancel, a former French army officer.

On Friday, the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle passed through the Strait of Gibraltar, escorted by three frigates and a submarine from the French navy. Diverted from the waters of the Baltic Sea, the only European aircraft carrier is expected to arrive in the Eastern Mediterranean by the end of the week, a flagship of an unprecedented deployment of military resources off Cyprus by several European countries, including France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, and Greece.These joint movements of European fleets around the island were initiated following the targeting, on March 1, of the British military base in Akrotiri by an Iranian-made drone fired from Lebanon by Hezbollah, as confirmed by Nicosia.
