The long-disputed maritime border between Iraq and Kuwait took a new turn on Saturday. Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it had submitted a revised map and a set of maritime coordinates to the U.N., seeking to formalize Baghdad’s sovereignty over a portion of the Persian Gulf shared with Kuwait. The move was quickly condemned by Kuwait, as well as by other Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia.The documents, submitted on Jan. 19 and Feb. 9, 2026, to the U.N. secretary-general, provide new definitions for Iraq’s territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone, and continental shelf, “in accordance with international law,” according to Baghdad.
