Israel approved on Sunday, Feb. 15, an official land registration plan in the occupied West Bank. The Palestinian Authority and numerous NGOs have since decried the plan as "a de facto annexation of occupied Palestinian territory" and "a grave violation of international law."This is a first since 1967 — almost six decades during which the process of property acquisition was frozen by military orders from the Israeli state. From now on, the Land Registration Authority, under the authority of Israel's Justice Ministry, can launch a systematic process of acquiring lands not recognized as "private" throughout Area C of the West Bank, which comprises 60 percent of the territory, and is subjected to Israeli civil and military control.The measure originated from a proposal by far-right Finance Minister Bezalel...
