Western Sahara: 'Disagreement persists over the right to self-determination'

It marks a significant step. Representatives of Morocco, Mauritania, the Polisario Front, and its backer Algeria convened for secret talks in Madrid on Feb. 8–9, under the auspices of the United States and the United Nations. The meetings represent a turning point following the breakdown of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Algeria in 2021, rooted in their long-standing dispute over the contested territory of Western Sahara. Last year, the U.S. recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the territory after Rabat signed the Abraham Accords, paving the way for other countries to follow suit. This marks a diplomatic milestone for Morocco, as its 2007 autonomy plan was referenced as the basis for U.N. Resolution 2797, adopted in October 2025 in connection with the conflict.
