The French embassy in Lebanon said in a statement on Monday that it "stands by Lebanon, and the city of Tripoli in particular, following the collapse of a building in the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood."

"Ambassador Hervé Magro and all staff at the French Embassy extend their deepest condolences to the families of the victims and affirm their full solidarity with the rescue teams," the embassy added.

14 people, including children, were killed as a result of the collapse of the building on Sunday, while eight others were pulled from the rubble alive. In response to the tragedy, Tripoli’s mayor, Abdel Hamid Karimeh, submitted his resignation.

There has been a growing risk of collapses in Tripoli, Lebanon’s poorest city, where infrastructure has sharply deteriorated amid chronic funding shortages.
