As part of her commitment to prison rehabilitation and the creation of spaces tailored to the needs of incarcerated mothers and their children, First Lady Neemat Aoun on Thursday inaugurated a room dedicated to children born at the Baabda women's prison, according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA).

The inauguration took place in the presence of Justice Minister Adel Nassar, Social Affairs Minister Hanin al-Sayyed, Health Minister Rakan Nassereddine, and Information Minister Paul Morcos.

Aoun stressed the importance of ensuring that incarcerated mothers with their children enjoy "dignified living conditions" and of preparing them for "future reintegration into society."

The project was supported and carried out by several associations and institutions: Dar al-Amal, which first raised the alarm about the situation of mothers and children in prison; the American University of Beirut (AUB), which oversaw health monitoring and vaccinations; the association Men Albi, which funded and contributed to fitting out the room; as well as the Montessori Association, which equipped the space with educational games suitable for the cognitive development of children.

Engineer Ziad Moarbes explained that "this space aims to provide a safer, more intimate, and more suitable environment for children under the age of two and their mothers, taking into account the needs of early childhood in terms of health, psychology, and development, and ensuring at least the minimum dignified living conditions under exceptional circumstances, away from any negative impact the prison environment could have on their growth and safety."
