The widow of Iran's former shah, Farah Pahlavi, has told AFP she believes there is "no turning back" following the latest wave of protests against the country's clerical authorities, saying she is convinced the Iranian people will emerge as "victors."
Gone into exile with her husband in January 1979 during the popular revolution that brought the Islamic republic to power, she said her "desire" and her "need today are to return to Iran," in an exclusive interview with AFP.
Protests over harsh economic inequalities began on Dec. 28 and surged into nationwide rallies on Jan. 8, challenging the ruling regime that has been in power since 1979. The protestors were met with a violent crackdown by the authorities that human rights groups estimate left thousands dead.
