'Everyone just gave us empty words, not even promises': Fouad Qattaya, 43, and Ali Younes, 33, abducted by Israel on Dec. 19, 2024

After the cease-fire, nine Lebanese citizens were abducted and detained in Israeli prisons. Nearly a year later, L'Orient Today met with the families of a detainee and his nephew, who worked together in aluminum installation.

On the morning of Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024, just hours before Israel would take him as prisoner, Fouad Qattaya was driving his two sons, Ali, 14, and Jawad, 10, to school, when the younger pleaded, “Please don’t go to Shaqra today. It’s too dangerous.”“Don’t worry, I’ll be back in time to drive you home from school,” Qattaya reassured him.Qattaya, 43, who works in aluminum installation, was headed to a site in Shaqra (Bint Jbeil) — where residents began returning to when the cease-fire came into effect on Nov. 27, 2024 — with his business partner and nephew, Ali Younes, 33.
