The post-UNFIL era: A European force, a revamped 'mechanism'?

BEIRUT — On Friday, President Joseph Aoun, while meeting with a delegation from the European Union, expressed his support for the deployment of an international force in southern Lebanon after the complete withdrawal of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), scheduled by the end of 2027.Shortly afterward, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam joined him, insisting on "the need to maintain a U.N. force in the South, even if at reduced capacity."Despite these calls, it remains difficult to know whether a multinational force would actually replace UNIFIL in southern Lebanon and, if so, under what framework. All the more so since the United States appears to favor greater deployment of the Lebanese Army.
