BEIRUT — During a meeting held on Tuesday, the Minister of Interior, Ahmad al-Hajjar, discussed executive measures to address motorcycle violations and regulate Valet Parking with Internal Security (ISF) officials, according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA).

The meeting was attended by the Director General of the Internal Security Forces, Raed Abdullah, Gendarmerie Commander Jean Awad, Beirut Police Commander Imad al-Jamal, as well as members of the committee tasked with following up on the motorcycle file, and a number of officers concerned with traffic affairs.

During the meeting, discussions focused on the executive measures to implement two previous decisions issued by Hajjar: prohibiting companies, institutions, showrooms and traders from handing over any motorcycle before it is duly registered, and regulating the work of car valets (valet parking).

Regarding motorcycles, Hajjar stressed “the need to curb violations and infractions, particularly the failure to wear helmets and reckless driving.” He instructed the ISF to “intensify awareness campaigns, take the necessary measures against violators and facilitate the adopted mechanism for paying traffic fines,” affirming that “respect for traffic laws is a cornerstone of ensuring road safety.”

The discussion also addressed the state of traffic on the roads, particularly in the city of Beirut. The main daily challenges resulting from congestion on major and secondary streets, especially during peak hours, were reviewed, along with proposals aimed at reducing traffic congestion, improving flow and organizing traffic in a sustainable manner.

Hajjar also emphasized “the necessity of taking executive steps and strictly enforcing the decision regulating the work of car valets [valet parking].”

Last Thursday, the Interior Ministry called on the country's various governorates to enforce the law regarding valet services which are notoriously unregulated across cities in Lebanon, with businesses often hiring valets for public parking areas.
