The Ministry of Health has released guidelines regarding the influenza strain currently circulating in Lebanon, A(H3N2), based on available scientific data. The ministry noted that “this strain is not new, it has been known for a long time, but this year it has undergone a mutation that makes its symptoms more severe and its spread faster than in previous seasons.” It added that “flu viruses are known to mutate and may prove more or less severe depending on the season.”

The ministry urged citizens to help protect the most vulnerable groups, including people with weakened immune systems, the elderly, children, pregnant women and others. “The flu vaccine is one of the most effective ways to prevent the most severe symptoms of the illness,” the statement said, adding that “vaccines covering the current variants are available and help reduce the risk of hospitalization and very severe cases.”

It called on citizens to follow these guidelines:

  • Follow hygiene rules, especially frequent handwashing
  • Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, and use disposable tissues
  • Wear a mask in enclosed spaces, especially at the first appearance of symptoms
  • Avoid crowds and gatherings if you feel unwell, and consult a doctor if symptoms seem unusual
  • Get vaccinated, especially if you belong to one of the vulnerable groups
