A car bomb exploded Tuesday in the city of Abu Kamal, in Syria's eastern Deir ez-Zor province, according to reports from Saudi broadcaster Al Arabiya.
The explosion reportedly targeted the vehicle of a security official, according to several media outlets. While Al Arabiya stated that it was a commander of the Syrian army's "Group 86," whose name has not been disclosed, some Syrian online media reported that the targeted vehicle belonged to the Syrian Defense Ministry. Several people were reportedly injured.
Group 86 is part of the security forces of Syria's new authorities and is said to be made up of former fighters from the "Ahrar al-Sharqiya" group, which had fought against the Islamic State group and the Assad regime during the Syrian civil war.
