BEIRUT — Around 100 Palestinians were detained in pre-dawn raids across the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, in what Palestinian rights groups described as one of the largest arrest campaigns in months.
The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office (ASRA) said many of those arrested were former detainees who had previously spent time in Israeli prisons.
The heaviest arrests were carried out in and around Nablus and Silwad, along with the village of Deir Jarir northeast of Ramallah, ASRA reported. Detentions were also reported in Hebron, Bethlehem, Qalqilya, Jenin, Jericho and Salfit.
In Nablus alone, Israeli forces arrested around 30 Palestinians — most of them former prisoners — interrogating several before releasing some of them later in the day, the group said.
At least one person was arrested in Tulkarem at dawn, and another in Tuqu, southeast of Bethlehem. Israeli forces also detained a Palestinian during a raid in Nablus.
ASRA added that Israeli troops raided homes and seized personal property, including jewelry.
Separately, a 21-year-old Palestinian detainee, Abdul Rahman al-Sabateen, died in custody, according to a Palestinian Authority statement carried by Al Jazeera. The statement did not specify the cause of death.
Violence in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967, has surged since Oct. 7, 2023, despite a mostly one-sided truce in Gaza that began on Oct. 10.
Since January, 51 Palestinian minors, aged under 18, have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
