The Finance Ministry announced in a statement on Sunday that a unit of southern Lebanon customs seized a truck on Friday night loaded with more than a thousand pairs of smuggled shoes, in violation of the Israel boycott law.

The Ministry did not specify the exact origin of these shoes or how they arrived in Lebanon.

Five people were also arrested in Saida, Wadi al-Zeina, Shehabieh, Nabatieh and Sour in connection with the case, and two warehouses were raided in Sour and Wadi al-Zeina, where additional quantities of smuggled goods were seized.

Investigations into the suspects are currently underway under the supervision of the military and financial prosecutors.

The Economy Ministry, for its part, has contacted the Israel Boycott Office to follow up and take the necessary measures.

Interactions between Lebanese and Israelis are governed by an Israeli boycott law dating back to 1955. This law prohibits any individual or legal entity from contacting Israelis or persons residing in Israel. It also prohibits all commercial, financial or other transactions. This offense is punishable by a term of three to 10 years of hard labor.
