A major upheaval is occurring in Yemen: Forces from the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a Yemeni separatist group backed by the United Arab Emirates, have launched a rapid offensive toward the north and east. They captured large areas in the oil-rich Hadhramaut region, which stretches from the Saudi border in the north to the Arabian Sea in the south, as well as al-Mahra, which borders Oman. In a statement published Wednesday evening, the STC described the advance as a battle to "liberate all the territory of our homeland, South Arabia, and to establish a modern federal state."
