Once a symbol of Beirut's cultural landscape, and severely damaged during the civil war, the Culture Ministry has launched an international competition for its renovation.
Last September, before completing her eight-year term as head of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay announced the rehabilitation project for Beirut's Grand Theater. "She asked the Culture Ministry to select an iconic building in the downtown area for a restoration and revitalization project. The main condition was that the building be located in the center of the city, neither in the east nor the west.
