Israel launches new large-scale operation in northern West Bank

In the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Israeli forces evicted families from their homes, turning them into military outposts.

The Israeli army launched a large-scale military operation in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, according to local sources. It reinforced its forces inside the northern Tubas governorate and deployed military bulldozers to several areas, while Israeli helicopters opened fire toward unidentifiable targets.

In response to a question from AFP, the Israeli army said the operation was new and not part of its "counter-terrorism" operation launched in January 2025, which has primarily targeted Palestinian refugee camps.

Violence in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967, has soared since Oct. 7, 2023, and has not ceased despite the mostly one-sided truce in effect in Gaza since Oct. 10.

Israeli troops or settlers have killed more than 1,000 Palestinians — many of them militants, but also scores of civilians — in the West Bank since the start of the war, according to an AFP tally based on Palestinian health ministry figures.

At least 44 Israelis, including both soldiers and civilians, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations, according to official Israeli figures.

A report published last week by Human Rights Watch (HRW) highlighted the expulsion of 32,000 Palestinians from their homes in just three refugee camps this year.
