The Civil Servants’ League of the public administration has called for a strike "starting tomorrow, Wednesday," and a sit-in in front of the VAT building headquarters on Friday, Nov. 21 at 10 a.m.
The League, which stated in a press release published in local media that it is in contact with other civil servant unions, criticized "the government's performance in defending employees' rights."
"It seems obvious that procrastination and postponement is the only policy the current authorities are pursuing," the statement said.
The economic and financial crisis began in 2019 and has still not been resolved. It has been accompanied by a record depreciation of the Lebanese pound (by around 90 percent), which has wiped out salaries that have yet to return to their pre-crisis levels. The government, for its part, will hold a meeting on Thursday, but the issue is apparently not on the agenda.
“Civil servants’ financial rights can no longer tolerate delays, especially after so many un-kept promises,” the statement continued, adding: “There must be an adjustment of salaries and supplements reaching 50 percent of the value of 2019 incomes.”
The League said that “in the face of this indifference from decision-makers, we feel obligated to issue this last warning before moving to a new stage of the movement.”
