Several websites, including social network X and the ChatGPT chatbot access page, were disrupted on Tuesday due to a technical issue affecting U.S.-based online service provider Cloudflare.

"We noticed an unusual spike in traffic to one of Cloudflare's services starting at 11:20 a.m. GMT," the provider said in a message sent to AFP, adding that "this resulted in errors in some of the traffic passing through the Cloudflare network."

"We do not yet know the cause of this unusual spike in traffic," it added, assuring that it was "doing everything possible" to return to normal.

The Downdetector website, where internet users report connection problems, reported disruptions for users of the social network X, the video game "League of Legends," and certain services from Google and OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.

Cloudflare is a platform that provides security and optimization services for websites and applications.

The American company claims to manage nearly 20 percent of global internet traffic.
