The European Union condemned the recent Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon and called for respect of the cease-fire agreement reached in November 2024 with Hezbollah, according to a statement released Saturday by its diplomatic service.

“The EU calls on Israel to end all actions that violate Resolution 1701 and the cease-fire agreement concluded a year ago, in November 2024,” said Anwar al-Anouni, EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs. “At the same time, we urge all Lebanese actors, particularly Hezbollah, to refrain from any actions or reactions that could further escalate the situation. All parties must work to preserve the cease-fire and the progress achieved so far,” the spokesperson stressed.

New strikes were carried out Thursday by Israel in southern Lebanon, targeting what it said were positions of the Hezbollah movement, accused of seeking to rearm. The Israeli army had earlier called on residents of four villages to evacuate buildings, warning it would strike Hezbollah military infrastructure.

The Lebanese Army said the Israeli strikes aimed to “prevent the completion” of its deployment in the area, in accordance with the cease-fire agreement that ended the war between Hezbollah and Israel nearly a year ago.

The Israeli strikes have already been condemned by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and by Iran, which on Friday denounced the attacks as “barbaric” and called on the international community to respond.
