Despite Morocco's UN victory, the Western Sahara issue remains unresolved
The resolution legitimizes Morocco's position on Western Sahara while keeping the path open for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people, determined to continue — if not wearied by — their fight for independence.
Oct. 31 has officially become a national holiday in Morocco. In a statement released Tuesday, the palace announced that the country would henceforth celebrate "Eid al-Wahda" (Unity Day) on this date, in reference to Morocco's "national unity and the territorial integrity." The announcement matches the magnitude of the event and, since making it, Morocco has been savoring its victory: the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of a resolution on the disputed Western Sahara that strongly favors its positions on this territory, which it has coveted for fifty years.
