On July 1, Saudi Arabia announced it had officially inaugurated its first Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) missile battery. The announcement was made during the visit of CENTCOM Chief General Erik Kurilla to Saudi Arabia.The system’s operation stems from a U.S.-Saudi contract at an estimated cost of $15 billion signed in 2017 for the acquisition of seven THAAD batteries. The deal includes 44 launch platforms, 360 interceptor missiles, seven AN/TPY-2 advanced radars and 16 mobile fire control units, as well as a full package of logistical support and long-term maintenance.While operating a single battery requires around a hundred soldiers, it remains unclear whether U.S. troops will be stationed on-site to operate the systems.
