The Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip have "created the conditions to move forward with a deal" for the release of hostages, the chief of staff of the Israeli army said Wednesday night.

"We have achieved numerous important and significant results, we have severely weakened Hamas's military and governmental capabilities," Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir said in a televised statement.

"Thanks to the operational power we have generated, the conditions have been created to move forward with a deal for the release of hostages" as part of a truce in Gaza, he added.
