BEIRUT — U.S. envoy Tom Barrack arrived in Beirut at 10 a.m. Monday to receive Lebanon’s official response to a roadmap calling for the disarmament of Hezbollah and all armed groups in the country by November.
The envoy began his visit with a meeting with President Joseph Aoun at 11 a.m. at the Baabda Palace. He will then visit Ain al-Tineh to discuss with Parliament President Nabih Berri. His next stop will take him to the Grand Serail, where he is to meet at 2 p.m. with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, before another meeting at 3:15 p.m., this time with Foreign Minister Joe Raggi.
In a statement on Sunday to the Qatari channel al-Jadeed, the president of the "American Task Force for Lebanon" (ATFL) Edward Gabriel, stated that "time is running out for Lebanon" and expressed hope that Barrack will receive a positive response today.
The head of the Lebanese Forces Samir Geagea criticized on Sunday the lack of an official stance from the Lebanese government in the face of the American proposal, which he believes "aims to advance the situation in the country, by ending the Israeli occupation and the aggressions of Israel on one hand and disarming all illegal forces on the national territory on the other hand."
