Israeli strikes have killed at least 62 Palestinians and injured more than 400 in the Gaza Strip between Friday night and Saturday afternoon, according to medical sources cited by Associated Press, despite the resumption of ceasefire negotiations.
Many children are among the latest victims: at least nine were among the 20 people killed in a strike on the al-Tuffah neighborhood in Gaza City, and three others were killed along with their parents in a raid targeting tents in the humanitarian zone of al-Mawassi, near Khan Younis in the southern part of the enclave. They were killed while sleeping, according to relatives cited by Associated Press.
Two other bombings on Gaza City’s stadium and the entrance to the Bureij refugee camp, in the central part of the territory, respectively caused 12 and 2 deaths, as well as several injuries, according to staff at the Baptist al-Ahli hospital.
The war in Gaza was triggered by an unprecedented Hamas attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The attack caused the deaths of 1,219 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to an AFP count based on official data. Forty-nine people abducted that day remain hostages in Gaza, including 27 declared dead by the Israeli army.
More than 56,410 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed in the Israeli military retaliation campaign in the Gaza Strip, according to data from the Ministry of Health of the Hamas government in Gaza, which the United Nations considers reliable.
