The Ministry of Public Works announced on Saturday that it has begun rehabilitation and maintenance work on the main road leading to Beirut’s Rafik Hariri International Airport (BEY), part of which was damaged during the war between Israel and Hezbollah.
In a statement, the ministry said it had started asphalting the inbound and outbound lanes of the road as part of a plan to improve the infrastructure of this vital axis, which serves as a main artery for transport to and from the capital.
The works began at the Chatila roundabout and will continue to the airport campus, as part of the “Lebanon on Track” initiative, which aims to rehabilitate key road networks in various regions of the country.
The ministry also called on citizens to be patient and understanding with any inconvenience caused by the construction, emphasizing that this phase is intended to facilitate mobility and enhance public safety on the roads.
A major road rehabilitation project connecting the airport to the capital was officially launched last April. This route, which passes through Beirut’s southern suburbs, was severely damaged during the Israeli offensive of 2023–2024.
The project involves restoring eight kilometers of infrastructure between the airport and downtown Beirut. The works include resurfacing the roadway and sidewalks, replacing damaged barriers, installing new traffic signs, traffic lights, reflective road markings and shock-absorbing systems — all aimed at enhancing safety and modernizing this key transportation corridor.
