The U.S. State Department announced Thursday that it had approved $30 million in funding for the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation backed by Israel and run by U.S. contractors as an aid distribution mechanism in the besieged Gaza Strip, the New York Times reports.
In the last month of operations in the Strip, 549 Palestinians have been killed while trying to collect aid boxes from the GHF distribution sites, which have been heavily criticized by humanitarian organizations and even its former CEOs.
State Department spokesperson Thomas Pigott said the GHF was “absolutely incredible and should be commended and supported.” This appears to be the first public announcement of U.S. government funding for the group, NYT reports. Pigott decline to confirm whether previous financial aid had been distributed to the organization.
