Iran says it 'transferred' inmates from Evin prison after deadly Israeli strikes

The Iranian judiciary announced Tuesday it had "transferred" inmates from Evin to other prisons in the province of Tehran, following an Israeli strike on the capital's penitentiary that resulted in fatalities.

Westerners, including French citizens and political opponents, are notably incarcerated in this prison.

The number of transferred prisoners was not specified. Earlier, the judiciary spokesperson, Asghar Jahangir, stated on state television that the strike had caused deaths and injuries "among staff, civilian visitors, and detainees," as well as damage.

French nationals Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who have been detained there for three years, "were reportedly not affected," said French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Monday, calling the Israeli strike "unacceptable."

The strike destroyed part of the administrative building of Evin, a large fortified complex located north of Tehran, where human rights advocates accuse authorities of mistreating detainees.

Iranian authorities defused two unexploded missiles near the prison, local media reported Tuesday.

Later, the Isna news agency released images of the damaged part of the prison, showing destroyed walls, collapsed ceilings and scattered debris.
