Interim Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa promised Monday that the perpetrators of the suicide attack on a Damascus church the day before, which left more than 25 killed and 63 injured, will be "brought to justice."

This is the first such attack in the Syrian capital since forces led by radical Islamists overthrew former President Bashar al-Assad on Dec. 8, 2024. The attack hit the Greek Orthodox Saint Elias Church in the Dweilaa district. "A suicide attacker affiliated with the terrorist group ISIS entered, opened fire, and then detonated himself with an explosive belt," the Syrian Interior Ministry said Sunday.

Security remains one of the biggest challenges for the new Syrian authorities, whom the international community has urged to protect minorities and include them in the transition process.
