BEIRUT — Commander-in-chief of the Lebanese Army, General Rodolphe Haykal, on Thursday emphasized the need to improve the living conditions of military personnel during his visit to the command of the airborne regiment at the Ghosta barracks (Kesrouan).

"The efforts made by the army should prompt officials to improve the living conditions of the military, in recognition of their sacrifices," the general said in a speech, assuring that this issue is being closely monitored by the command.

"The army fulfills its duty to the homeland by ensuring its security, while respecting the sacred nature of its mission," he added, noting that the troops "remain equidistant from all parties, without distinction." He argued that "the security stability provided by the army is the foundation of economic stability."

Haykal also stated that "the army is the backbone of security in Lebanon" and that its units "rely on disciplined and professional soldiers," highlighting the importance of every military member's role, "regardless of rank." He finally emphasized "the confidence of brotherly and friendly countries," particularly citing "their ongoing support, including the recent aid from the State of Qatar."

The army's situation has been severely impacted by Lebanon's economic crisis, leading to difficult living conditions for military personnel and retirees. The depreciation of the Lebanese pound has significantly reduced salaries and pensions, making them insufficient to ensure a decent standard of living. The Army regularly receives aid from foreign countries, most recently from the United States, Italy, Turkey, and Qatar.
