BEIRUT — After the election of Haidar Mohammad Tfaili as the mayor of the village of Deir al-Zahrani (Nabatieh), six out of the 15 members of the municipality resigned amid disagreements over Tufaili's election, according to our correspondent in the South Muntasser Abdallah and the state-run National News Agency.
These are the first resignations of municipality members since South Lebanon's municipal elections on May 25. These elections followed three earlier rounds in the rest of the country. These were the first elections since 2016, as they were postponed since since 2022 for security, logistical or financial reasons.
Haidar Mohammad Tufaili was elected on Monday in the Nabatieh Saraya as the mayor of Deir al-Zahrani and Hassan Kamel Traboulsi as his deputy, under the supervision of Governor Dr. Huwaida al-Turk.
Later on Monday, NNA reported that four members of the municipality of Tartaj (Jbeil) submitted their resignations to the qaim maqam (state representative at the district level) of Jbeil, Natalie Merhi al-Khoury.
NNA did not specify the reason behind their resignations.
