UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Saturday for a "permanent cease-fire" in the Gaza Strip, just hours after Israel announced an intensification of its offensive in the Palestinian territory.

"We need a permanent cease-fire now," Guterres said during his address at an Arab League summit in Baghdad. "I am alarmed by reports of Israel's plans to extend its ground operations," he said, calling for the free entry of humanitarian aid to end the blockade in the Gaza Strip. "We categorically reject any forced displacement outside Gaza," he emphasized.
