A man was killed in the northern occupied West Bank during an operation by Palestinian security forces, they stated on Tuesday.
The spokesman for these units attached to the Palestinian Authority, General Anouar Rajab, stated that the teams were deployed in the Tubas governorate in pursuit of a "wanted" individual.
The governor of Tubas, Ahmed Asaad, identified him as Rami Zahran, aged 19. "The security forces were met with acts of resistance and gunfire, and they responded, which led to the death of a young man. Efforts are currently underway to calm the situation," he confirmed.
Asaad stated that Zahran was shot at the entrance to the Faraa refugee camp, where he was from.
In December 2024, Palestinian security forces launched a campaign targeting men they describe as outlaws, but that some movements consider fighters serving the Palestinian national cause.
Triggered by the arrest of several activists, the clashes involved Palestinian political movements supportive of armed opposition to Israel.
One of these groups, the Jenin Battalion, is largely composed of fighters affiliated with Islamic Jihad or Hamas, who have controlled Gaza since 2007.
Hamas is the main political rival of Fatah, the party of President Mahmoud Abbas, which is widely represented within the Palestinian Authority, the governing entity exercising limited control over the West Bank.
Criticized by some of the public, the operations of the Palestinian Authority in the northern West Bank lasted several weeks and resulted in several deaths.
They ended after the Israeli army launched a large-scale military operation that notably targeted the Jenin and Tulkarem refugee camps in January and is still ongoing.
