U.N. agency in charge of Training and Research (Unitar) will provide €17 million to the Lebanese Army, specifically to the "units trained to deploy in the South," a delegation from this organization announced to the Lebanese president, Joseph Aoun, on Thursday.

According to a message posted on the president's X account, the head of state was "informed" of this donation by the director of Unitar's Peace Division, Evariste Karambizi, and the director of the diplomatic division of the Training and Research Institute, during a meeting in Baabda. This financial aid aims to "support the military units trained for deployment in the South, as part of their training and logistical equipment," within the framework of implementing U.N. Resolution 1701.

This resolution, adopted in 2006 to end the July war between Hezbollah and Israel, served as the basis for the cease-fire agreement that came into effect last Nov. 27, 2024, after months of renewed warfare between the two belligerents. It provides for the deployment of thousands of Lebanese soldiers south of the Litani and the withdrawal of Hezbollah from this area, bordering Israel. In this context, the Lebanese army announced the recruitment of thousands of new soldiers.
