The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas announced on Saturday that the fate of Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander remains unknown, four days after saying contact had been lost with his captors in the Gaza Strip.
“We managed to recover the body of a martyr who was responsible for guarding the prisoner Edan Alexander, but the fate of the latter and of the other fighter-captors remains unknown,” said Abu Obeida, spokesperson for the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, on his Telegram channel.
On Tuesday, Abu Obeida had announced that they had “lost contact” with the group holding Edan Alexander following an Israeli airstrike on the location where the hostage and his guards were being kept. “We are trying to protect all the [hostages] and preserve their lives despite the brutality of the aggression, but their lives are in danger because of the enemy army’s criminal bombardments,” he added on Saturday.
Hamas had released a video of Edan Alexander alive on April 12. Captured while serving in an elite unit near Gaza, he criticized the Israeli government in the footage for continuing his detention.
During the unprecedented Hamas attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, 251 people were abducted. According to the Israeli army, 58 are still being held in Gaza, including 34 confirmed dead.
