Russia is 'ready' to do 'everything possible' to help find a diplomatic solution on the Iranian nuclear issue, the Kremlin assured on Wednesday, just days ahead of new discussions between Iran and the U.S.
'The Russian Federation remains ready to do everything possible to contribute to resolving the situation around the Iranian nuclear program by political-diplomatic means,' Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during a briefing attended by AFP. 'We will be ready to do everything that depends on us,' he stated, responding to a question about whether Moscow could become one of the guarantors of a possible agreement between Tehran and Washington.
This statement comes as the Iranian foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, is expected in Moscow 'at the end of the week,' according to Tehran, to discuss the issue of talks between Iran and the U.S., ahead of a new round of discussions with Washington on Saturday.
Iran and the U.S., which have had no diplomatic relations since 1980, exchanged views last Saturday under the mediation of the Sultanate of Oman on the thorny issue of the Iranian nuclear program. Western countries, led by the U.S., have long suspected Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran rejects these allegations and defends its right to nuclear energy for civilian purposes, notably for energy. Russia is one of the members of an international agreement on the nuclear issue concluded with Iran in 2015, but currently nullified by the U.S.s' decision to withdraw in 2018.
France, the United Kingdom, China, and Germany are also part of this agreement. In 2018, Donald Trump had dramatically withdrawn his country from the agreement and reinstated sanctions. Since returning to the White House in January, he has called on Iran to negotiate a new agreement and threatened to bomb the country in the event of diplomatic failure.
