In all the 18 months since its war on Gaza began, Israel has never controlled such a large part of the Palestinian territory. After collapsing the fragile cease-fire it had agreed upon with Hamas with its deadly bombing campaign on March 18, Israel took the opportunity to seize more land in Gaza and expand its control on the ground.According to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) report released on April 8, 66 percent of the Gaza Strip now constitutes no-go zones for the population, whether or not evacuation orders have actually been issued. Israel claims its maneuvers are aimed at increasing military pressure on Hamas to force it to release the remaining 59 hostages, 24 of whom are believed to still be alive. But all indications are that Israel is laying the groundwork for a long-term military occupation...
