The President of Parliament and head of the Amal movement, Nabih Berri, reiterated that his political party is not in favor of postponing the upcoming municipal elections, which are scheduled to begin on May 8 in Lebanon — a message he had already conveyed earlier in the month. "For our part, we insist that they proceed as planned, and we are not in favor of postponing them to a later date," he said in an interview with Asharq al-Awsat.
"Amending the law... is out of the question due to the lack of time, as we no longer have time to organize the elections, and the mere act of initiating the amendment process would inevitably lead to a delay in the elections set by the Minister of the Interior and Municipalities, Ahmad Hajjar," he emphasized. As the election approaches, proposals for a law to establish an Islamic-Christian parity in Beirut have emerged. Introduced by former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in the capital, this parity at the 24 municipal council seats is now threatened as competition between the lists intensifies.
"The alternative is to create the broadest political coalition in which political parties, groups and families are represented," Nabih Berri concluded.
