On the occasion of the 50th commemoration of the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), which started on April 13, Education Minister Rima Karameh ordered schools, technical institutes and universities to observe a minute of silence on Monday.

"This is a painful memory for our country, this day has led to so much destruction and hundreds of thousands of victims, and left wounds whose traces persist to this day," she stated, in a release issued Saturday.

Karameh also encouraged institutions to arrange courses and activities to help young people better understand this conflict.

According to the minister's statement, "at a time when the country is experiencing a new revival, this historical period can serve as an example to urge us to strengthen our national unity."
