The powerful earthquake that struck on March 28 in Myanmar has resulted in 3,354 deaths, according to a new toll published Saturday by state media. The earthquake, which shattered buildings and destroyed infrastructure across the country, also left 4,508 injured, and 220 people remain missing, according to the same source.

According to an estimate by the U.N., more than three million people have been affected in some way by the disaster, which added to the devastation of four years of civil war.

These years of fighting have left the country's economy and infrastructure in tatters, which has significantly hampered the arrival of humanitarian aid. The ruling military junta has conducted dozens of attacks against rebel groups since the earthquake, including at least 16 since a truce was announced Wednesday, according to the U.N.

More than a week after the earthquake, many Burmese are forced to sleep outside, either because they no longer have housing or out of fear that their house might collapse. The UN's chief aid official, Tom Fletcher, met with victims Saturday in Mandalay (central), a city located near the epicenter. "The destruction is staggering," he wrote on X. "The world must come together behind the people of Myanmar," he added.
