The Lebanese president, Joseph Aoun, received an invitation from the chargé d'affaires (chief of mission) of the Iraqi embassy in Lebanon, Nada Karim Majoul, extended by the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, to visit Iraq.
The brief statement specifies that the aim of this official trip, whose dates have not yet been communicated, is to "discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries." It will be Aoun's first trip to Iraq since his election on Jan. 9.
Lebanon and Iraq are notably linked by an agreement whereby SOMO, the public agency responsible for marketing Iraqi oil, supplies fuel to Electricité du Liban since 2021, under conditions presented as preferential. During the war between Hezbollah and Israel, many Lebanese living in areas exposed to bombings sought refuge in Iraq.
