Netanyahu's attitude toward both Gaza and his corruption trial reveals a near obsession with staying in power and avoiding conviction, says Yossi Mekelberg, an expert in Israeli geopolitics.

The twists and turns seem unending. For the first time in Israel's nearly 77 years of existence, its government dismissed the head of Shin Bet, Ronen Bar, who has headed the internal security services since 2021.The Supreme Court announced on Friday a "provisional measure suspending" Bar's removal from the position, a move that allows Israel's highest judicial authority to consider petitions launched against the dismissal which was pushed through Cabinet by Israeli Prime Minister's right-wing coalition. According to a court statement, a decision will be reached no later than April 8. In the lead up to this announcement, thousands of Israelis protested in Jerusalem against Bar's firing and against Netanyahu's decision to reopen the war against Gaza, collapsing the cease-fire deal with dozens of hostages still held in the besieged Strip....
