BEIRUT — Education Minister Rima Karami announced on Wednesday that she has submitted a draft decree to the Cabinet to cancel this year’s official intermediate certificate (Brevet) exams and replace them with school-based assessments, according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA).

She noted that the draft has been referred to the State Shura Council for review before being presented to the Council of Ministers, adding that "the Cabinet is responsible for its approval."

The decision to cancel the Brevet exams this year is attributed to several factors, including a lack of financial resources and security concerns at the start of the academic year, which coincided with the escalation of the war between Hezbollah and Israel.

As part of preparations for the official exams, Karami held administrative and educational meetings on Wednesday with Fadi Yarak, the ministry’s Director General and head of the examining committees, and Hisham Ishaq, the head of the Educational Center for Research and Development. The discussions focused on the administrative, educational and logistical arrangements for the Lebanese Baccalaureate exams, which are scheduled for the last week of June.

The minister finally urged administrators and candidates to "continue preparing for the exams, as they remain the official national assessment tool," adding that "the curriculum reform project will include improvements to evaluation and measurement methods, based on a competency-based approach."
