U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held an hours-long phone call on Tuesday during which Putin agreed to a partial 30-day ceasefire of attacks on energy infrastructure with Ukraine and discussed with his American counterpart possible U.S.-Russia cooperation in the Middle East.

"The leaders spoke broadly about the Middle East as a region of potential cooperation to prevent future conflicts," part of the brief statement released by the White House reads. "They further discussed the need to stop proliferation of strategic weapons and will engage with others to ensure the broadest possible application."

"The two leaders shared the view that Iran should never be in a position to destroy Israel," the American statement adds. Russia has long been a military and financial ally of the Iranian government, which in turn, is allied with various parties currently in conflict with Israel, America's foremost ally in the region.

The call, their second since Trump came into office in January, reportedly lasted around two hours and comes one week after U.S. and Ukrainian officials first agreed to a proposal for a month-long cease-fire during a meeting in Saudi Arabia. The Kremlin said the conversation between Putin and Trump had been a "detailed and frank exchange of views," according to an official statement cited by Reuters.

The White House statement concludes with a general comment on the leaders having agreed to a improve their bilateral relationship, saying it has a "huge upside," including "enormous economic deals and geopolitical stability when peace has been achieved."
