BEIRUT — An Israeli drone strike killed at least one person in southern Lebanon's Marjayoun district early Saturday afternoon.
The attack targeted a Rapid car as it was driving along the road to Burj al-Muluk. Eyewitnesses said that the car was hit directly and caught fire, and while one of the car's passengers was thrown from the vehicle by the force of the strike, the other was burned inside the vehicle, witnesses report.
The Lebanese Health Ministry announced shortly after the strike that one person was killed in the attack, while testimonies from the ground indicated that two people had been killed.
The Israeli army claimed responsibility for the strike through a statement released by its Arabic-language spokesperson. The Israeli army "raided a Hezbollah terrorist who was engaged in terrorist activities in the Kafr Kila area in southern Lebanon," the statement reads.
A cease-fire has been in place between Israel and Hezbollah for over three-and-a-half months, but a side-agreement signed by the U.S. and Israel outlines an understanding between the two by which Israel is permitted to attack Lebanon should it perceive "threats" to its security.
The Israeli army has been targeting Lebanese routinely in recent weeks, reminiscent to the targeted attacks that were characteristic of the 11-month long cross-border war of attrition between Hezbollah and Israel, which eventually escalated into a full-out war last September. Since the cease-fire began on Nov. 27, 2024, Israel has killed more than 80 people in Lebanon.
