The Kremlin said Wednesday it is waiting for Washington to provide details on its proposal for a 30-day cease-fire, which Ukraine accepted the day before following U.S.-Ukrainian talks in Saudi Arabia.
“We have scheduled contacts in the coming days with the Americans, and we are counting on this to obtain complete information,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said at a press briefing. He added that Russian authorities expect to be informed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, the two American officials who negotiated with the Ukrainians on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia.
Peskov said a “telephone call at the highest level” between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin was possible within a “fairly short time frame.”
Ukraine on Tuesday accepted the U.S. proposal for a 30-day cease-fire with Russia, saying it is “ready for peace” after more than three years of war following Russia’s February 2022 invasion.
“For the Russians, the ball is now in their court,” Rubio said.
The United States subsequently resumed military aid to Ukraine and the sharing of military intelligence, which had been suspended by Trump after a public altercation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.
A series of statements by Trump, echoing Kremlin rhetoric and falsehoods, deeply concerned Ukraine and European allies. However, they welcomed the U.S. effort to secure a 30-day cease-fire.
